Hello there! I’m Rafferty and I am an Addressable Strategy Apprentice at KINESSO UK&I. I’m going to let you in on what my day looks like as a Media and Advertising Apprentice.

Entering the world of advertising as an apprentice is an exciting experience. No two days are the same, and there’s always something new to learn. From brainstorming campaigns to analysing data, my role as an apprentice is packed with opportunities to grow. Here’s a glimpse into a typical day in my life.

5:30am: I wake up at 5:30 and leave the house by 5:45. Giving me just under 2 hours to make my way into London. I head to the gym for a quick early morning session to wake me up and start my day. Once I’ve finished, I’ll make my way to the office which is just a quick 2-minute walk.

8:10am: Once I arrive at our London HQ, I’ll head down to the shower facilities and freshen up. Shortly after, I’ll head to the elevator and make my way to our agencies floor. As soon as the lift doors open, I head straight to the coffee machine to ensure I get my early morning caffeine fix!

8:30am: I set up my desk for the day, then head up to The Social on the 7th floor to grab my morning fuel. There’s only one superior breakfast and that is… Marmite on toast (controversial I know).

9:00am: Once I’ve finished my breakfast, I’ll review any outstanding tasks from the previous day and start a fresh task sheet ahead of our weekly ‘connect’ team meeting. This quick session allows everyone to share updates, discuss ongoing projects, and set goals/priorities for the week.

10:00am: By mid-morning, I’m fully immersed in my tasks. This could mean working on campaign analysis, client data reports or assisting with the planning of a campaign. One of my favourite aspects of this role is brainstorming campaign ideas. I often sit in on meetings where we discuss campaign solutions, audience strategies, and innovative ways to engage consumers. As an apprentice, I’m encouraged to contribute ideas, and it’s exciting to see some of them come to life.

12:00am: Around mid-day, I take a lunch break. I look at what’s on the menu and head up to the 7th floor (The Social) for our free lunch. Today it was either chicken escalope or celeriac steak with potatoes!

Lunch time is a great time to catch up with colleagues, network with other apprentices, or go for a well-deserved walk in the city. I feel that getting fresh air and disconnecting from your work helps you re-engage throughout the afternoon.

1:30pm: As an apprentice, it is crucial to take time out to complete your coursework. Therefore, post-lunch, I tend to focus on any outstanding apprenticeship work. It could be my monthly assignments, revision for my end-point-assessment or just research on the industry to broaden my knowledge. Throughout the apprenticeship we have a workshop every month which is run by an external training agency. They are incredible and will take you through everything required to learn and begin a successful career within media.

On some days, I also participate in training sessions to gain deeper insights into the industry. Today I attended a session with Tesco Media who took us through the different stages they can target consumers, whether it’s on their website, in store or out of store. Sessions like this help us all determine strategies to fulfil the client’s needs across campaigns.

2:30pm: Today, KINESSO and Google are holding an awards ceremony to celebrate achievements and great work from different teams across the business. We put forward one of our case studies relating to the use of AI within YouTube activations and we were nominated! Each category had 2 nominees, and this meant I had to present at the Google offices outlining our entry.

5:00pm: As the day comes to a close, I head back to the office to wrap up any outstanding tasks and review my completed tasks to prepare a plan of action for tomorrow. If I have any questions on tasks or need any feedback, I touch base with my manager who will assist me.

Being an advertising apprentice in media consists of an exciting blend of strategy, creativity, and analytics. It’s a role that keeps me on my toes and pushes me to grow every day. Whether I’m refining campaign tactics, analysing ad performance, or brainstorming innovative ideas, I know that my contributions are shaping the future of advertising.

For anyone considering an apprenticeship in advertising, my biggest advice is to stay adaptable, ask questions, and take every opportunity to learn. The industry is fast paced, but with passion and dedication, it’s a truly rewarding career path!
